How To Test A 4 Pin Flasher

Testing a 4 Pin Flasher (or an electronic flasher relay) is a job that can be a bit daunting for the average car owner, but it’s actually quite simple - and can often save you from an expensive auto repair bill. Knowing how to test a 4 Pin Flasher can help you quickly identify electrical problems like nonworking turn signals or hazards, broken dome lights, and more.

The first step in testing a 4 Pin Flasher is to locate it. It’s commonly mounted near the fuse box, however in some vehicles it can be found under the dash or behind the steering wheel. Once you’ve located the flasher, remove the plastic cover to access the flasher terminals.

Next, use a multimeter to check the flasher for continuity between the two ground pins. To do this, set your multimeter to the ohms setting, then place one lead on each of the ground pins. If the multimeter registers continuity (i.e. if the needle moves on the display), then the flasher is working properly. If there is no continuity between the pins, the flasher needs to be replaced.

Finally, check the other two pins on the flasher. Set your multimeter to the voltage setting and place one lead on each pin. A working flasher should not show any voltage; if it does, the flasher needs to be replaced. By quickly testing the 4 Pin Flasher yourself, you can avoid ordering costly replacement parts and making unnecessary trips to the mechanic.
