What Advantage Does A Circuit Switched Network Have Over Packet

The network infrastructure of any modern business heavily relies on communications data networks. This is where the debate between circuit-switched networks and packet-switched networks has been raging for decades. And while packet-switched networks, such as the internet, have become the norm, there are still some advantages to using a circuit-switched network.

A circuit-switched network dedicates a physical connection between two points that is active until the call ends. This type of connection is more reliable than a packet-switched network because it provides a dedicated path from start to finish. This means that, with a circuit-switched network, the data transmitted will not be rerouted or disrupted as it would be with packet-switching. Since the connection is dedicated, latency and jitter (uneven packet delivery) are drastically reduced, resulting in higher quality voice and video calls.

Another advantage of a circuit-switched network over packet-switching is its ability to prioritize certain types of communication. For example, voice or video calls can be given priority over regular data traffic, resulting in consistent quality when compared to packet-switching. This means calls will remain crystal clear even when other traffic is present on the network. Furthermore, circuit-switched networks often provide different classes of service at no extra cost.

While packet-switching has its advantages, such as scalability and ease of use, these features come at the cost of quality and reliability. By dedicating a physical connection between two points, circuit-switched networks can offer better reliability and quality of service for voice and video calls. As businesses continue to rely more and more on digital communications, having the option of using a circuit-switched network should definitely stay on the table.
