How To Wire A 220 Plug With 3 Wires

Installing a 220 plug with three wires can be a simple project for the DIY enthusiast. It’s important to note that 220 volts requires specific equipment to install safely. Working with electricity can be dangerous, so make sure to follow all safety precautions before beginning.

Before getting started, you'll need to ensure the power source is shut off. Double check by testing the circuit - use a circuit tester to confirm the line is deactivated. Choose an appropriate size of cord and plug for the electrical appliance you're using.

Using a screwdriver or other tool, remove the outlet plate and access the wiring already connected to it. Unscrew the existing wire connections and detach them from the outlet. Cut off the existing outlet and install the new one by connecting the wires in the proper order. The screws of the new outlet should correspond with the correct wire colors - black, white, and green. Securely tighten all screws, with the green wire screwed into the ground strap for added safety.
